TPS and the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library have launched a new program that is geared toward encouraging students to become avid readers. The “We Love Reading” campaign focuses on motivating elementary and middle school students to gain a greater appreciation for the joy of reading. The Library has provided a list of age-appropriate books for students in grades K-8. (K-8 booklist). For a more complete list, please visit www.toledolibrary.org and click on KidsPlace. The Library has also developed a list of tips for parents that will help encourage your child to gain a love of reading (parent tips). TPS students who visit their neighborhood library through April 12th will receive a "Reading Rocks" window cling.
Budget Proposal
2010 Budget Toledo Public Schools is facing a budget deficit for the fiscal year 2010 -2011. The administration recently presented a plan to the Board of Education to reduce the budget for next year by $30 million. TPS will be on the May ballot asking voters to pass a 0.75 % income tax. If that levy passes, the district will still need to reduce next year's budget by $17.5 million. The district is looking to the community for feedback and suggestions on this important issue. When schools are delayed or cancelled due to inclement weather, Toledo Public Schools will notify students and parents via local radio and television stations. District officials will evaluate road and weather conditions prior to making their decision. The local media is notified by 6 a.m., when possible, once the decision to delay or close school is made. The district website will also be updated with current information.
