On a cold and dreary night with continuos rainfall, the Start Spartans faced adversity several times but came up big in the end to defeat Woodward 23-22 to win their 3rd straight City League title. A defensive stand at the end secured the win for the Spartans as they finish the season at 7-3 overall. They won their 15th consecutive City League game as well. Caleb Coyne scored the first touchdown to take a 6-0 lead only to see the Polar Bears strike back for two quick scores to take a 14-6 lead late in the 2nd quarter. Coyne then hooked up with Tyrik Barbine on a 68 yard pass play and then converted on 3rd down with Barbine again to cut the deficit to 14-13. On the ensuing kickoff, Woodward wasn’t able to secure the kick and the Spartans cashed in recovering at the Woodward 6 yard line. Jake Baumgartner kicked a 23 yard field goal to give the Spartans a 16-14 lead into halftime. Woodward then took a 22-16 lead but behind the play of Devon Ragland, the Spartans marched down the field to score the deciding points with just over 5 minutes to play. The defense made two stands, one coming at the end of the game inside Start territory to secure the game. Congratulations Spartans!
