The beginning of a new school year has begun. A time to learn new things, have fun learning and make new friends. Children may experience anxiety about the beginning of the school year. They may be fearful of attending a new school, having a different teacher or leaving their summer routine at home. Assure your child that he/she will see children they know and/or meet children their age with the same interests. Assure your child he/she will be safe, learn many new things and have fun.
SET UP A SCHOOL YEAR ROUTINE FOR YOUR CHILD
- Make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast. A lot of sugar may cause your child to be jittery at school.
- Set a specific homework and study time. Try to stick to it.
- Review the homework with your child to make sure it is neat and accurate.
- Ask questions about the study material or chapters of the book read.
- Talking about the school day lets your child know you care.
- Getting uniform and book bag organized the night before can help your child develop organization skills.
- Have a set bedtime. It may help your child fall asleep easily.
TEACH SOCIAL SKILLS FOR MAKING NEW FRIENDS For some children making new friends is an easy process. For other children it can be frightening and uncomfortable. Parents can help by teaching some basic social skills and the true meaning of friendship.
- Pay attention to what other children are doing. Decide if you want that person to be your friend.
- Appear friendly and approachable.
- Do not attempt to be the center of attention.
- Add something to the topic being discussed.
- Make eye contact when speaking or listening.
- Discover what you have in common with the other person.
