Think College Now, the Northwest Ohio College Access Program for students, recently received a donation from the Key Foundation in the amount of $10,000. The donation will be used to support expansion of their program, which helps public school children in underserved communities to apply for post-secondary programs including career exploration, ACT/SAT preparation work, filing for financial aid, and making college and apprenticeship visits. Put simply, Think College Now's mission is to provide the opportunity for students in Northwest Ohio, who have the desire and have developed the requisite skills, to obtain education beyond high school. The program has been running for 4 successful years, and in conjunction with Key's recent financial contribution, it will now implement a Student of the Month component, whereby one math student will be recognized for superior grades and interest in pursuing careers associated with finance. He or she will receive a TA83 plus scientific calculator and have a professional photo taken, which will then be on display at the school and in local KeyBank branches. In addition, the student of the month will have the opportunity to shadow a banker for a day and receive a "student of the month" polo shirt. The program will run in two separate Toledo Public Schools this year: Rogers High School and Woodward High School. The first students of the month will be selected for the month of December and will be awarded on December 20, 2007 at Rogers High School at 1:00 p.m.
"We are committed to supporting the efforts of Think College Now by helping to further educate these students about the economics of daily life, about saving, and about planning for the future," said Teresa Smith, KeyBank's Vice President of Community Development. "We're very proud to be sponsoring this special student of the month program and helping these kids get a leg up on college and on life."
On a monthly basis, Ms. Smith will be visiting both schools to present the student of the month awards and will be speaking to the math classes about basic finance and careers in banking.
The student of the month program will run for seven straight months, starting in December 2007 and ending in June 2008.
