Students from Toledo Technology Academy are preparing for the unveiling of the robot they plan to enter in the 2008 FIRST Robotics Competition. The FIRST Robotics Competition is a unique varsity sport designed to give high-school-aged students first-hand experience in the fields of engineering and research.

To begin the process, students were given a six-week timeframe to construct their robot using a standardized kit of parts and rules that were provided by the event founders and coordinators, Mr. Dean Kamen and Dr. Woodie Flowers. Engineers from the Dana Corporation have acted as mentors to the TTA students throughout the construction phase.

Each year teams are presented with a new “game” that their robot must maneuver; this year’s game is played on a track with the object being for the robot to attain the highest score against an opponent by making counter-clockwise laps while moving large balls over and/or under an overpass that is built into the track. The winning team is scored on a number of factors including, excellence in design, demonstrated team spirit and professionalism, an ability to overcome obstacles and the score of their robot during the competition. Following the unveiling ceremony to parents, staff and TTA friends, the robot will be shipped to Novi, Michigan where the students will compete in the regional competition during spring break.

WHEN:  Public unveiling of the robot is scheduled for Tuesday, February 12 at 6 p.m.
WHERE:  Toledo Technology Academy – 3301 Upton Ave.

Area media representatives are welcome to view the robot and interview students Tuesday prior to the unveiling  – please contact the Communications Office to schedule a convenient time to visit TTA. For information about the FIRST Robotics Program, go to www.usfirst.org.
