In Toledo Public Schools special education programs and services are provided for students who have been identified as “students with disabilities.” If you suspect that your child requires special education service, contact your local school principal. The principal works with the School Assistance Team (SAT) in their school. Parents and teachers may access the School Assistance Team (SAT) by completing a “Request for Assistance Form,” which is available at each school. Once completed the form is returned to the building Principal and submitted for School Assistance Team (SAT) consideration.
School Assistance Teams (SATs) are school-based problem solving groups whose purpose is to assist teachers and families with strategies for dealing with the learning needs and interests of pupils. School Assistance Teams (SATs) are a resource for linking teachers and students with available resources. A School Assistance Team (SAT) addresses acknowledged instructional and behavioral problems and enhances existing methods of operation within the school organization.
Before beginning to evaluate students to determine if they have a disability, the district is required to attempt to provide interventions to address concerns raised by the family or the school. If, following these interventions the School Assistance Team (SAT) determines that the student is suspected of having a disability, a multifactored evaluation will be completed to see if the student is eligible for service under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The district follows Federal and State of Ohio guidelines regarding operating standards and services for students with disabilities. Toledo Public Schools offers special education for children with special needs such as learning disabilities, cognitive disabilities, speech disabilities, vision disabilities, hearing disabilities, multiple disabilities, severe emotional disabilities, and physical disabilities.
When a student is determined eligible for special education service an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) will be developed by the school with input and assistance from the parents. The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) identifies special education services that are based on the needs of the individual learner. Toledo Public Schools will provide the special education service as identified on the Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which will be reviewed at least annually. Toledo Public Schools endeavors to provide special education service for students with disabilities in their home school, or nearby schools that have appropriate services. Transportation for students who are required to leave their home schools is provided following Toledo Public Schools Board of Education policies.
