Parents and guardians of Toledo Public Schools are being asked to fill out a Parent Survey so the district can collect parent perceptions related to a number of key topics.

Those topics include engagement, possible barriers to engagement and the overall culture of their children's school. It is critical to gather this feedback in order to provide a learning environment that respects a culturally-diverse community.

The survey results will determine what resources parents might need to better support their students' academic success and what obstacles that may impact their participation. The information will be used as a key driver as the district works to align programs and resources.

In addition to the link on the district’s website, parents and guardians can fill out the Parent Survey by texting @pxtps to 35134 - the survey can be taken on any texting device. The survey can also be taken using a QR code. Finally, there will be some paper versions available but it is hopeful as many people as possible will use one of the electronic versions to reduce the need to manually enter the data.

Toledo Public Schools is set to announce its latest initiative in career technology options for high school students.

District leaders on Wednesday will unveil a plan to open the Aerospace and Natural Science Academy of Toledo in time for the 2018-2019 school year. The new academy is aimed at ninth- through 12th-grade students interested in the fields of aviation, environmental science, sustainability, and wildlife management.

Students currently enrolled at the TPS Aviation Center and Natural Science Technology Center have a split schedule. Part of their day is spent at their home high school, and the remainder is spent at the center, where their specialty classes are offered. The new academy will allow students to take both their core curriculum and specialty classes at the same building.

The academy will be located at Toledo Express Airport in the building that used to house the Flight Safety International pilot training program.

The Aviation Center doesn't look like any other school building within Toledo Public Schools and that's exactly the point.

Housed in a hangar at Toledo Express Airport - at the end of a long row of airline industry-related companies - the center is a hands-on, three year Career Tech program that prepares students to become FAA-approved maintenance technicians.

Yes, there is a standard classroom for the book work and one with computers at every desk so students can study diagrams of plane parts. But there's also a large room filled with plane engines that seniors take completely apart and put back together and a cavernous hangar filled with the three planes the center owns, as well as parts of planes that are either being taken apart or put together.
