A letter from the President of the Board of Education:

A Path Forward: Our District’s Transformation Plan

Dear TPS Proud Community:

Tonight, our school district reached a pivotal moment. Following the Board of Education’s directive, our administration has formally presented a proposed Transformation Plan that is meant to address a $68 million deficit while setting the district on a path that reinforces innovation and sustainability.

This plan is the result of months of rigorous analysis, difficult conversations, and a shared commitment to the future of our students. As we begin the formal review process, I want to be clear about why we are here and where we are going.

Toledo Public Schools finds itself at a crossroads due to circumstances largely beyond our control. Like many districts across the country, we are navigating a "perfect storm" of shifting state funding models and the expiration of one-time federal supports. These external fiscal realities have made our current operating model unsustainable.

To ignore these facts would be a disservice to our students. We are choosing to act now, in a proactive and strategic manner that ensures that our district remains strong, stable, and capable of delivering a high-quality education for generations to come.

While the necessity of this plan is driven by financial reality, its components have been deeply influenced by you. The proposal presented tonight incorporates vital feedback from our community meetings and the thousands of responses from our online surveys.

We heard your priorities regarding student programs, neighborhood stability, and educational excellence. While we cannot avoid difficult decisions, the administration took your input and used it to ensure that every choice made in this plan prioritizes the classroom experience and student outcomes.

The Board of Education now enters a focused period of deliberation. We have until Tuesday, April 28, to review every detail of the proposal, ask the necessary questions, and suggest refinements. This is not a process we take lightly. At the April Board of Education meeting, a formal vote will be taken to accept the transformation plan.

As the details of the proposal become more widely understood, we are committed to helping our staff and families understand how they will be impacted. We will be providing detailed information, including FAQs and specific impact guides, on our district website to ensure transparency at every step.

These are decisions no one wants to make, but they are the decisions leadership demands. Our goal is not simply to "cut" or "downsize," but to transform our district into a sustainable organization that can continue to offer the best possible opportunities for our children.

We are doing what is best for our students, and we are doing what is necessary for our future. Thank you for your continued engagement, your passion for our schools, and your partnership as we navigate this transition together.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Christine Varwig
President of the Board of Education
