TPS Superintendent Dr. Durant hosted a ceremony to celebrate the opening of the Electric Vehicle Lab at Toledo Technology Academy of Engineering, the first of its kind for a public high school in Ohio.
Construction of the $4.5 million facility received $1.25 million in federal support secured by Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio 9) and features:
- 11,000 sq. ft. of space including a repair area with six vehicle lifts and a classroom
- Solar panels are installed on the roof to assist with renewable energy education
- A Model 3 Tesla trainer vehicle, 1 of only 6 of its kind in the world
The targeted groups for studies and training at the Electric Vehicle Lab include:
- Junior and Senior students at Toledo Technology Academy of Engineering
- Current mechanics who want to keep up their skills to be marketable
- Displaced autoworkers in search of a new career
EV is a two-year 11th and 12th grade program taught by a team of two instructors to classes of no more than 25 students per grade level. EV students (including those focusing on EV manufacturing and infrastructure) will study and test for:
- ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) xEV Electrical Safety Awareness Certification Level 1 and ASE xEV Electrical Safety Awareness Certification Level 2
- Multiple Snap-On tool-specific certifications and 3M PPE (personal protective equipment) certifications.
- Students studying specifically for careers as high voltage vehicle and battery technicians will also study and test for the ASE xEV Level 3.
The facility will also be used by the Auto Technology program at nearby Start High School who will use the EV Lab as a satellite facility to study electric vehicles in addition to their study of traditional internal combustion vehicles at Start.
Speakers at the event will included TPS Board Vice President Bob Vasquez, Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, UAW Local 12 President Bruce Baumhower and GM-Toledo Propulsion Systems Plant Executive Director Tamberlin Golden.
