Since the global pandemic began, Toledo Public Schools administrators have worked diligently to come up with the best plans to continue to educate students while still taking into account their safety, as well as that of their families and all staff members.
The district had successfully launched a hybrid schedule with its youngest students the week of October 12 when, later that week, Lucas County went back into Red on the Ohio Public Health Advisory System. That designation is the second highest risk level and means TPS administrators had to reassess their efforts to bring all students back on hybrid schedules.
After thoughtful discussions, district leaders have decided to continue with the hybrid model of learning, but adjust the dates when remaining students will be brought into their classrooms. Here are the modified March to Yellow dates:
• PreK through second grade students will continue following the hybrid schedule, which means they are in class two days a week and learning remotely the other three days.
• All students in third through fifth grades will start on the hybrid schedule on Monday, October 26.
• Students in sixth through eighth grades will continue learning remotely until Monday, November 16, when they will return to their classrooms and follow the hybrid schedule. Students in seventh and eighth grade at magnet schools will return this day as well.
• All high school students will remain completely remote for the entire first semester; at this time, the plan is for them to start on the hybrid schedule at the start of the second semester, Tuesday, January 5, 2021.
These date adjustments will give district leaders time to monitor all available data and adjust accordingly. Whether the district stays with the Yellow Light hybrid model or goes to online learning completely will depend on a number of factors, including the number of coronavirus cases reported within TPS, as well as the numbers posted by Lucas County and the state of Ohio.
At this point, all athletics will continue, but further restrictions may be put in place; adjustments to food delivery schedules will be announced shortly.
Please know, all decisions have been made with the safety of students and TPS employees in mind and will continue to be the top priority if adjustments need to be made going forward.
Please note: There is no school for any students on Election Day, November 3, and there is no school on Thursday, November 5, and Friday, November 6, for all PreK through eighth grade students so parent/teacher conferences can be held. That week, Group A elementary students will be in class on Monday and Group B elementary students will be in class on Wednesday.
One final note: these adjustments only pertain to students who had been planning to return to their home schools in Yellow Light status. Students in the Virtual Academy will see no changes to their schedules.
