When you join our TPS Proud Family, you join a team dedicated to preparing competitive college and career ready graduates. Substitute non-instructional staff are critical members of our TPS team and enjoy incredible opportunities to make a difference in the lives of our students every day.

Working as a substitute is a required first step for many permanent non-instructional positions at TPS, which include clerical, food services, and miscellaneous labor. Serving as a substitute is also required for all staff who join the Paraprofessional team. Permanent placement may become available depending on the District’s needs and employee performance.

Toledo Public Schools recognizes the valuable contributions that substitute staff make each and every day. Starting pay varies by position and is listed under each job category below. Wages generally increase once an employee progresses to a permanent position.
TPS requires all applicants to undergo a screening process prior to hiring which includes a background check (BCI and FBI) and employment verification. A drug screening is required for positions that involve operating a TPS vehicle.
